The Morton Ranch High School boy’s basketball team currently reigns as one of the best basketball teams in Katy ISD, if not the best. This is due in part to a team effort but also one of their key players: Lionel Cryer Jr., known around the school as LJ.

Junior LJ is a six feet one inch tall teenage basketball prodigy and is known for his outstanding performances on the court and ability to score a lot of points during his games. His growing interest and love for basketball began when he was only a baby.

“My dad put a ball in my hands when I was first born, and ever since then I ran with it,” Cryer said.

Since that first moment, he has continued to get better at the sport. He trains hard every single day, and those around him can see just how dedicated he really is.

“I run the hills to stay in condition and go to the gym and make 1,000 shots a day,” Cryer said.

His hard work pays off and definitely shows during his games. Right before he goes on the court he likes to drink a smoothie and enjoy a bag of skittles while listening to music to get ready for the game. He has made lots of memories in his many years of playing basketball, but one of his favorites happened more recently.

“My most memorable moment was when I scored 45 points in a single game,” Cryer said.

The boy’s basketball team is currently undefeated in district, and overall their record for this season is 22 to 6 so far. LJ said he hopes to keep it that way.

Cryer said, “I want to go undefeated in districts this year and then go all the way to State and just take them one at a time. I’m looking forward to making it to the State Championship with my teammates.”

Just like in any team sport, LJ feels that his team is like his family. He enjoys being around his teammates, and he has a great bond with all of them.

“I consider my teammates as brothers, because we all have each other’s backs,” Cryer said.

LJ wants to continue playing basketball in college and hopes to make it to the NBA one day to play professionally.

“I love basketball, because I’m a competitor,” Cryer said. “It brings me joy, and it helps me take my mind off things.”
